Dorian Davis is an experienced and versatile defender with a relentless motor and work ethic. Davis carved out a college career across four schools: Western Carolina, Southern Illinois, Towson University, and finally Austin Peay. Despite his journey through multiple programs, Davis has showcased his ability to adapt to different schemes and positions. Known for his high motor and never-quit mentality, he primarily profiles as a dime safety but has logged over significant snaps at outside corner, slot, box, and free safety, highlighting his positional versatility.
Strengths:
Reliable Tackling: A solid wrap-up tackler with good vision and technique, ensuring he can close on the ball carrier effectively.
Run Defense: Moves downhill with urgency and was highly effective in run support.
High Motor: Davis plays with relentless effort, refusing to give up on plays until the whistle blows.
Positional Versatility: Logged over 200 snaps across outside corner, slot, box, and free safety each, showcasing his adaptability and value in multiple alignments.
Special Teams Potential: Davis’s ability to tackle in space and his high-effort mentality make him an ideal candidate for immediate special teams duties.
Weaknesses:
Smaller Frame: Needs to add size and strength to better handle physical matchups, particularly against NFL-caliber blockers. Held up well against competition at his level, but was exposed at the FBS level.
Play Recognition: Can be fooled by play-action fakes and misdirection, requiring further refinement in diagnosing plays.
Struggles with Physicality: Tends to get blocked out of plays too easily, especially when facing stronger competition at the next level. Needs to add mass and strength to shed blocks and allow the best part of his game, his run defense, to shine.
Summary:
Dorian Davis brings a mix of experience, effort, and versatility to the table. While his size and play recognition need improvement to compete at the next level, his tackling ability, motor, and adaptability make him an intriguing prospect. Davis projects as a developmental player with value as a special teams contributor due to his ability to tackle in space and the effort he plays with on every down. While I do not see him being drafted, I do expect him to make the most of every opportunity he has as a potential UDFA.
